Most anyone who’s traveled to points both north and westward via I-43 is familiar with the rest stops at Denmark and Maribel in Manitowoc County. The popular travel respites have been fixtures for 44 years, having been built in 1980 without significant modifications, and annually serve 22,000 travelers along the corridor between Green Bay and points south. Regular users will likely welcome the news that improvements are on the way.
On Wednesday, US Senator Tammy Baldwin, who is running for reelection, announced a 12-1/2 billion dollar allotment from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law which will fund the replacement of Rest Areas 51 and 52, construct new comfort buildings and maintenance garage facilities, and construct new parking lots for both automobiles and trucks, increasing the truck capacity by 72 stalls. Lighting will be replaced at both facilities, roadways will be reconstructed in order to accommodate the additional parking capacity, pavement will be improved, and an existing, substandard beam guard will be removed.
