A campaign by Washington County Sheriff Martin Schulteis to prevent placement of a violent sexual offender there has succeeded.
In early June, Sheriff Schulteis received a notice from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services concerning the planned placement Paul Schabow, an Outagamie County resident classified as a Sexually Violent Person, in a CBRF in the Town of Trenton, about 10 miles southwest of Random Lake. He’d reached the end of his prison sentence and, according to state law, had to be released to a location where he’d live under supervision. The Sheriff objected on ethical grounds, saying that the offender had previously violated conditions of supervised release, and was never a resident of, or convicted of crimes, in Washington County. The Sheriff canvassed 120 homes within 1500 feet of the location, determined that they were unwilling to host Schabow, and armed with their response argued his case with the State.
Those efforts have paid off, and the DHS now says Schabow will be placed elsewhere.
Washington County Executive Josh Schoemann commended both Sheriff Schulteis and Washington County Attorney Brad Stern, saying that “I join our neighbors in Trenton…in a collective sigh of relief.”
