Warm weather has arrived, and warming waters will soon invite people to enjoy a cool dip at Sheboygan’s lakeshore or in the quarry. With that in mind, the Sheboygan Police Department has a few helpful reminders about regulations concerning the two popular cooling-off areas.
The Sheboygan Quarry Beach & Waterfront Park opens in just over a week on June 21st, where swimming is only allowed within the controlled area. Access to that is via a paid pass, and those are available for $15 per visit. The SPD reminds the public that cliff-jumping at the quarry is prohibited and they will take action against both that and after-hours swimming due to the hazards involved. You can learn more about the park at sheboyganquarry.com
There are no restrictions on use of Sheboygan’s Lake Michigan shoreline, however beaches aren’t monitored with lifeguards. Those using personal watercraft can enjoy the lakefront, but only via an approved City boat launch. Operation over 4 miles an hour is prohibited within 1700 feet of the shore, and jet skis aren’t allowed to rest on, or being launched from the beach. And since state law also controls their use, jet ski operators should check DNR rules on their regulation. In Brief, rules on personal watercraft use in Wisconsin are as follows:
■ A person younger than 12 years may not operate a
personal watercraft (PWC).
■ A person 12–15 years old may operate a PWC only if
he or she has completed a boating safety course that is
accepted by the Wisconsin DNR. (Parental supervision
is not a substitute for a boating safety course certificate
as with other motorboats.)
■ A person at least 16 years old may operate a PWC
only if he or she has completed a boating safety course
that is accepted by the Wisconsin DNR. A person born
before January 1, 1989, is exempt from the safety course
requirement.
■ A person younger than 16 years may not rent or lease
a PWC.
