Governor Evers has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff from sunup ‘till sunset on Sunday in honor of firefighters in Wisconsin who lost their lives in the line of duty.
In announcing the order on Thursday, Governor Evers said that on that day, and throughout the year, “…it is important for us as Wisconsinites to pay our respects to firefighters who’ve lost their lives and made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, as well as to the loved ones who miss them and mourn their loss every day.”
This weekend is National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, and a memorial service will be held on Saturday at the Wisconsin Fire & EMS Memorial in Wisconsin Rapids, where the memorial wall contains the names of four Sheboygan County firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty. They are:
Fireman Emil Birr of the Sheboygan Fire Department who died in the line of duty on April 13, 1904.
Lineman Wilbur Lemkuil of the Sheboygan Fire Department who died while working on a power line pole when he struck a high voltage wire on August 24, 1954.
Chief Richard A. Penning of the Kohler Fire Department, who died of a heart attack while investigating a car fire on Highland Drive on November 5, 1990.
Elkhart Lake Fire Department Chief Edward Weber who lost his life to a heart attack while fighting a grass fire on April 13, 2003.
In their honor, both US and Wisconsin Flags should be at half-staff on Sunday.
