The NFL draft exploded with quarterbacks Thursday night with a record six taken in the first 12 picks. The Green Bay Packers wisely avoided being a part of that desperate run by taking Jordan Love three years before he became the starter. Still, General Manager Brian Gutekunst wanted to add a passer before the weekend was up and he waited until the 7th round to take Michael Pratt from Tulane University. Pratt was a four year starter for the Green Wave and played a lot of football, going over 20 touchdown passes in all four seasons, finishing his career with 90, piling up over 9000 passing yards. He’s bigger in stature than last year’s QB pick, Sean Clifford who earned the backup job behind Love. Pratt is 6-3 and 220 pounds and scouts say he’s an outstanding prospect who simply needs time to adapt to the NFL game. He’ll get that because Love isn’t going anywhere.
With their final pick of the draft, the Packers finally snapped up a cornerback, Kalen King from Penn State (5-11, 194). If he competes as well as last year’s seventh rounder, Carrington Valentine, the Packers hope he can find a way onto the roster.
