16-and-17-year-olds will now need permission to use tanning beds in Wisconsin. The new law, known as 2023 Wisconsin Act 190, was signed into law last Friday, and requires 16 and 17-year-olds to get parental consent before using ultraviolet-emitting tanning equipment at commercial tanning facilities. Prior to the new law, those 16 and under were prohibited from use, but no restrictions were placed on older teens.
Dr. Alex Means, the President-Elect of the Wisconsin Dermatological Society, praised passage of the bill, citing what he called “long-term health risks associated with indoor tanning, including deadly skin cancers later in life.” He called tanning equipment a key reason why skin cancer is the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-29 years old, and said the new law now gives parents a role in guiding their teens who want to tan.
