The recent discovery of Chronic Wasting Disease on a deer farm in southwestern Sheboygan County has triggered the inclusion of Ozaukee County among others already banned from baiting and feeding deer. The Department of Natural Resources’ January 26th confirmation of the disease that results from malformed proteins known as “prions” was from farm-raised deer within 10 miles of the Fond du Lac, Ozaukee and Washington County borders common to Sheboygan County.
Wisconsin State Law requires that the DNR enact a three-year baiting and feeding ban in counties where CWD has been detected, and a two-year ban in adjoining counties within 10 miles of a CWD detection. And while the Wisconsin DNR didn’t specifically identify the farm involved, geographic constraints place the farm involved within the southwest 1/4 of Sheboygan County.
Sheboygan County residents will be prohibited from baiting and feeding deer until at least 2027. Ozaukee County will begin its two-year baiting and feeding ban on February 15, 2024 while Fond du Lac and Washington Counties will renew bans already in place.
