I have a question: Am I on planet Earth anymore? We’ve got M&M’s issuing official statements about inclusivity and retiring their candy mascots because changes in their footwear started a firestorm of arguments on Twitter? What? I feel like Allen Iverson talking about practice. We’re talking about M&M’s? M&M’s??? The candy???
Now admittedly, until the statement issued yesterday, I had only been following this M&M controversy casually. M&M Twitter and Packer Twitter have a VERY slim intersection on my social media algorithm so I wasn’t 100% locked in. From what I can tell this entire story started when M&M’s changed up the Green M&M character’s footwear:
Notice how Green went from knee-high boots to what look like regular ol’ sneakers. Brown also changed to a more sensible heel, it appears. Other than that, nothing much changed. But somehow those switch-ups and the addition of a Purple character:
Sent the world spinning off of its axis.
Now look, if a brand has a mascot/character and they want to add different characters to appeal to a more diverse audience, great! Make a guy M&M, a girl M&M, fat M&M’s and skinny M&M’s, M&M’s that wear sneakers and M&M’s with thigh-high boots snapping necks at the club. All good! Hell I identify a little with that new Orange M&M. He looks like his bets didn’t hit this past weekend during the Divisional Round. Get that guy some CBD or something. But let me state this as clearly as I can: IF YOU LOSE ANY SLEEP OVER M&M CHARACTERS IT’S TIME TO REASSES.
PS: If this is all manufactured publicity/rage that leads to a Super Bowl commercial then I redact.
