“The Gray Ghost,” it’s about a Rolls-Royce prototype, nicknamed the Gray Ghost, that is stolen only to be discovered in the possession of one of Sam’s distant relatives and stolen again right out from under Sam’s nose.
The Gray Ghost was originally stolen in 1906 and almost put Rolls-Royce out of business. Sam and Remi learn that the great American detective Isaac Bell (of the Van Doren Detective Agency) once worked the case. Bell was in England chasing criminals that were robbing train cars and was said to have come across the stolen Gray Ghost. The $50 million car has been passed around since then and is said to contain treasure from the train robberies.
When Sam’s mother calls him to help a distant relative who has fallen on hard times he has no choice but to get involved. Sam’s mother’s cousin is in possession of the Gray Ghost and he is being pressured to sell it at auction because he’s lost all of his money and has been selling off his assets to stay afloat. When the car goes missing and he is accused of stealing it and murdering a security guard in the process, Sam and Remi jump into action to not only find the car, but prove his innocence.
Sam and Remi become the target of some pretty savvy cyber criminals and find themselves stranded with no money and no way to contact Selma for help. Understanding now what happened to Sam’s relative, they are more motivated than ever to find out what happened to the Gray Ghost all those years ago and understand why these criminals want it now.
“The Gray Ghost” is another fantastic book in the Sam and Remi Fargo Adventures series by Clive Cussler and Robin Burcell. I would give this one another 4.5/5. It is a really quick read. It is one I didn’t want to put down. I loved that the story contained a story within the story. I think the characters are great and the way that Sam and Remi were targeted was so good. If I would have made it through the whole series without someone trying to hack them it would have been a disappointment. When you’re a multimillionaire cyber crime has to be your number one fear. It was an area of vulnerability that had yet to be explored and I’m glad they did it.
