Anyone who knows anything about me knows that if I had to choose one movie to watch for the rest of my life it’s Grumpy Old Men. All time classic. Some (me) would call it a cinematic masterpiece. There have been exactly zero times in my life that I’ve seen that it’s on TV and haven’t watched it. So imagine my surprise today when I learned that not only is there a Grumpy Old Men Festival, but it’s been happening every year for 29 years! I honestly didn’t even know what Wabasha was a real place in Minnesota. Here’s the agenda for this year’s festival at the end of February:
All well and good, but I have a few additions I would like to make to their list of activities:
- Snowmobiling at the ol’ Clickner Place.
- Bacon eating contest. See if you can eat a whole damn plate.
- Chunky Milk drinking contest.
- Hormel Chili luncheon at Slippery’s Tavern and Ristorante.
- Catfish Hunter fishing competition.
- Late night polka performed by Handsome Hans.
Forecast for the event: Butt cold.
In all seriousness I think I may need to make a pilgrimage to Wabasha one of these years for this festival. Save your vacation days, Lindsey! We’re spending them in the dead of winter in Minnesota!
PS: I’ll never forget the first time I saw this movie. My parents rented it, I was probably 9 or 10 years old. When Walter Matthau uttered the line at :12 of this video, I was in TEARS:
