Nine City of Sheboygan Parks will be getting new trees, thanks to a collaboration that kicks of the first phase of the project at Optimist Park on Saturday.
The effort to replace trees killed by the invasive Emerald Ash Borer is made possible by a partnership between the Sheboygan Rotary Club’s ROOTS initiative, the City and County of Sheboygan, and the Alliant Energy Foundation’s Million Trees Program. That program is an effort by Alliant Energy to plant one tree for each of its Iowa and Wisconsin customers.
ROOTS, which stands for Restoration Of Our Trees Sheboygan, completed its first project to replace trees in six city parks in 2020. The current project has a second phase scheduled for 2022 which will establish one of the State’s largest bare roots accelerated growth systems with a gravel bed facility at Sheboygan’s Municipal Services Building on New Jersey Avenue. When fully operational next year, it’s expected to produce 540 new trees each spring.
