Let me do my best Stefon to describe last night’s game, AHEM:
Last night’s game had EVERYTHING. Freddy Peralta scared everyone by leaving the game early, the bullpen threw up zero after zero after zero, Avi Garcia hit a game-tying 9th inning home run after Omar Narvaez and Craig Counsell got ejected, Christian Yelich bunted for an RBI single with 2 outs in the 10th inning, Devin Williams locked it down for the win, there were screaming babies in Mozart wigs, Furbies, dogs and cats living together.
What. A. Game.
I’m not sure I’m very good at it, but I try not to blow regular season baseball wins out of proportion. It’s a LONG season. Sure I get excited when the Brewers win, and frustrated when they lose, but you’ve got to keep in mind that this thing goes on for about 6 months. Can’t get too high, can’t get too low. But there are games in the regular season that just feel different. And last night was one of those games.
Freddy Peralta leaving after 2 innings with shoulder soreness: Not great! The good news came after the game when Peralta and the Brewer training staff said they both felt like it was just a little inflammation, and that he could make his next start. YUGE bullet dodged. When you look forward to the postseason, the reason you like this team’s chances is because they have three aces in Burnes/Woodruff/Peralta. Take one of those away and it’s a steep drop-off. You’re looking at Brett Anderson or Adrian Houser starting a playoff game against San Francisco or Los Angeles or Atlanta. I like those guys, solid players, but our championship hopes rest primarily on a fantastic pitching staff. So regardless of the outcome of the game, the best news coming out of last night was that Peralta’s injury doesn’t appear to be serious.
But what an effort after he left. Hunter Strickland, Jake Cousins, Brent Suter, zero, zero, zero. Adames does what he does and goes yard, Avi goes yard, and all of a sudden the Brewers are right back in the game, down a run.
Then the 9th inning. Still down 3-2, Omar Narvaez leads the inning off and gets rung up on a pitch so far outside that it wasn’t even in the St. Louis zip code*. Narvaez and Counsell both get ejected. Next batter, next pitch, Avi goes yard again and ties it up.
Cut to the 10th inning:

How about the balls on Yelich to drop down that bunt. Incredible. Also: 7 game hitting streak for Yeli.
But you could just tell by the demeanor in the Brewer dugout that this one was different. EVERYBODY was up on the last step of the dugout. The Brewer fans that made the trip made their way over to the seats behind the Brewer dugout and were making NOISE. MVP chants for Adames, whooping it up after every key play. And to have all of that happen IN St. Louis?? You love to see it.
So, they go for the sweep tonight. And if they can get the win, they go 9-1 on a 10 game road trip. They are now 22 games over .500 on the road, 42-20. That’s absurd. Combined with with the Reds loss to the Cubs, the Brewers now own a 9.5 game lead in the division, and a 12 game lead over St. Louis. BURY THEM.
* Which, as we know, are meaningless.
PS: Is this really about to be the best year in the history of Milwaukee sports? I’ll hang up and listen.
