In a prime time speech last week, President Biden told the nation that the upcoming Independence Day celebration could be a landmark in the battle against the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the pandemic of the COVID-19 disease it causes. The City of Sheboygan is poised to follow that lead, but much rests upon how people handle the public health situation between now and then.
Mayor Mike Vandersteen told WHBL in an email response this Monday that the City of Sheboygan and Visit Sheboygan, the tourism entity for the Sheboygan Area Tourism Zone, have made the decision to go ahead with planning a traditional 4th of July Celebration Freedom Fest in 2021. The move was made based upon the downward trajectory on the COVID-19 pandemic. The Mayor said: “We need to continue this downward trajectory and get everyone vaccinated. If there would be a spike of new COVID cases and a serious increase of COVID-19 in Sheboygan the decision to hold this event could change. I urge everyone to continue to mask up and wash your hands often.”
Celebrations were cancelled in 2020 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. This 4th of July would be the second National Holiday celebration observed here since the start of the pandemic, assuming plans for the Memorial Day Parade and Celebration go through as scheduled on May 31st.
