Wisconsin Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu of Oostburg, along with Assembly Representative Tyler Vorpagel of Plymouth, wasn’t impressed with the 2021-23 Biennial State Budget outlined Tuesday by Governor Tony Evers. Along with other Republicans, they represent the majority party in both the Senate and Assembly, meaning the eventual budget will likely bear little resemblance to Evers’ proposal.
After the Governor’s address last night, Senator LeMahieu called the Governor’s budget “completely irresponsible and unrealistic”, saying that it’s reckless with tax dollars and loaded with divisive policies that move our state backward. Vorpagel said that the proposed budget didn’t rise beyond a “wish-list” of liberal tax and spend policies, but said he looked forward to working with colleagues on the Joint Finance Committee to “help craft a budget that will keep Wisconsin heading in the right direction.” Sheboygan County’s other representative in the assembly, Terry Katsma, has yet to comment.
The proposed budget now goes to the Joint Finance Committee which will hold a series of hearings to gather input, after which it prepares its own budget. Once the Assembly and Senate take their turns adjusting that document, the differences are hashed out and the budget is supposed to be finalized by July 1st.
