MADISON, WI (WTAQ) — The consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic go deeper than case totals, hospitalization numbers, and death counts.
Anxiety and stress from social distancing and fears stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic are wreaking havoc on mental health in Wisconsin. DHS secretary designee Andrea Palm says reports of mental and behavioral health issues have spiked during the pandemic.
“The increase in calls to 211 Wisconsin asking for help with behavioral health concerns tells us that people are struggling,” Palm said. “The need for assistance with mental health and addiction issues rank third among the reasons for calling 211, behind only COVID-19 and housing concerns.”
Drug addiction problems, too, have increased–and with deadly consequences.
“Since the start of the pandemic, we’ve seen an increase in suspected opioid overdoses by 117 percent from the same time frame last year,” said Palm.
Wisconsin residents can dial 211 to get crisis help and more.
“We need you to know that help is available,” said Palm. “And that it’s okay to ask.”
