LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - An 18-year-old man who allegedly confessed to killing his mother, whose body was found dismembered and stuffed in a freezer, was charged with murder on Tuesday.

Moises Meraz-Espinoza, who authorities say walked into a Los Angeles area police station last week and told officers he had killed his mother, 42-year-old Miralda Espinoza, was charged with a single count of murder, prosecutors said.

Meraz-Espinoza, who faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison if he is convicted, was scheduled for an arraignment later on Tuesday.

Prosecutors have asked that he be held on $1 million bail pending further court proceedings.

Police have given few details about Meraz-Espinoza's alleged confession or offered a motive for the grisly crime.

A Los Angeles County Coroner's spokesman said Espinoza died from asphyxia and compression of the neck.
