NEENAH, Wis. (WTAQ) - A local Muslim leader thinks ignorance about his faith is on the rise.
Salman Aziz with the Fox Valley Islamic Society in Neenah says the planned Koran burning by a Florida evangelical pastor on September 11th reflects more on that group than it does the Muslim faith.
"I'm surprised [the pastor] doesn't know that the Koran contains parts of the Old Testament and New Testament," Aziz said. "He's, in a sense, burning his own books."
Aziz says it seems like Islamaphobia is on the rise, pointing to the recent controversy over planned mosques in Green Bay and New York City. He says it wouldn't come as a surprise if there were some backlash over the Koran burning.
"There's always individuals who are going to excite people and there's really very little you can do about such individuals, no matter which faith they belong to," Aziz said.
He says on 9/11, we should instead come together by learning more about one another.
"It takes a while to heal these wounds. The only way to heal is by sharing information."
