MILTON, Wis. (WTAQ) - An attack on a pet dog in Milton has got a state lawmaker concerned.
Assembly Democrat Kim Hixson of Whitewater says he’ll try to toughen Wisconsin’s animal mistreatment laws, after a 10-year-old Great Pyrenees named Casey was wounded by an arrow in May.
It happened while Jim and Lynn Morke were walking their 2 dogs in Milton. The alleged attacker was charged with a misdemeanor count of animal mistreatment.
Hixson says the defendant could not be charged with a felony because the pet did not die or was permanently maimed. The arrow just missed Casey’s lungs, and the Morkes still had to pay $4,500 for emergency care.
If he’s re-elected in November, Hixson says he’ll introduce a bill next year to allow felony charges against anyone who intentionally tries to hurt or kill a pet. He says he’ll call the bill “Casey’s Law.”
