SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) - The State and defense both concluded their cases on day four of the Michael Moffett murder trial.
On the fourth and final day of testimony, the State, represented by District Attorney Joe DeCecco, rested its case following the conclusion of testimony by Sheboygan Police Detective Joel Clark.
After defense attorney Robert Wells made his opening statement, he called eight witnesses to the stand, including accused murderer Michael Moffett. Moffett told the court that Luis DeLeon had reached for a weapon first, prompting Moffett to draw his own gun, killing DeLeon in an act of what the defense has called self-defense. During Moffett’s testimony, which lasted over an hour, he also said there was tension between him and DeLeon over competing drug operations, adding he was fearful for his life. Moffett went on to say he fled to Tennessee, where he was found hiding on his father’s property, because he was scared what might happen to him being a convicted felon. Once Moffett’s testimony concluded the defense rested its case.
Closing arguments are set for Friday morning, with the case heading to the jury then. A verdict could come as soon as Friday afternoon.
