WHITEHALL, Wis. (WTAQ) - A woman accused of embezzling $85,000 from a mental health facility in western Wisconsin is due in court for the first time Wednesday.
49-year-old Lori Berg of Whitehall is charged with felony theft in a business setting. Authorities said they learned in April that the money was missing from a patient trust account at the Trempealeau County Health Care Center. It was one of two accounts Berg was in charge of handling.
Court records indicate that the center got suspicious when Berg started using a pencil to write ledgers – and it became possible to change the books to make them appear to be balanced. Police quoted Berg as saying she used some of the money to pay for property taxes on her home.
