I Am A Geek Posted May 28, 2010 by Dangerous Dave

Okay, this is clearly the laziest blog entry I've made in a long time but I have my reasons.  It's late.  I'm tired.  Not feeling very creative.  Oh, I could go on!  But for the sake of you, my reader I won't.  By the way, that is so weird to say reader!  See, I'm a radio DJ and used to saying listener.  Alright, never mind.

In the following space I present to you one of the many reasons I'm proud to be a geek.  The people in the video below are some of the people I admire most in life so here ya go.

"Lost" Technology Posted May 25, 2010 by Dangerous Dave

Well, time for another Tech Tuesday blog and since I'm not quite ready to give up talking about "Lost" quite yet, let's look at one of my favorite of the show's technology.

First seen in season 2, episode 1, "Man of Science, Man of Faith" this computer is actually a combination of an Apple II Plus running an Apple III display with a Disk II 5.25-inch floppy drive attached.  It was located in in the Dharma Initiative's Swan Station and was used to stop the regular build-up of electromagnetic energy.

Every 108 minutes a code must be entered into this computer.  Failure to do so can cause really bad things to happen.

The Lost Series Finale, What It Meant Posted May 24, 2010 by Dangerous Dave

Okay, I'll admit it, I was WAY off when it came to predicting the Lost series finale ending!  The survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 aboard an alien ship while little green men monitor their unconscious dreams was a little far fetched.

Click here to read my other predictions.

The real conclusion was even better and dripping with symbolism.  If you haven't seen the episode yet, stop reading now!

In my opinion, how the show finally explained the flash sideways was brilliant! After spending the whole last season trying to figure out it's meaning it really threw me off guard.

Basically everything on the island was real, as in, the characters didn't die in the plane crash, and those that flew away at the end lived their lives off the island before dying at some point in the future. When Jack's eyes close at the end, he has died, and chronologically, that's when the "flash-sideways" part of the storyline begins.

Somebody I know thought Jack's dad was supposed to be God and Jack, volunteering to be the island's protector was Jesus Christ, who then sacrificed himself to let the remaining castaways live.

The meaning I came up with was that Vincent the dog was actually God because of course Dog spelled backwards is God and he came and lied down next to Jack as he died at the end.

Who's explanation do you think is better?

The only criticism I have is that they didn't bring back Mr. Echo.  At the end during the church scene when everybody finally realizes that they're dead and Jack is about to go out to meet them I was half expecting Mr. Echo to be there acting as kind of the priest, which is the type of character he played when he was on the show.

Oh, and they never explained what those series of numbers meant either!  I guess we'll never know.

How Lost Could End Posted May 23, 2010 by Dangerous Dave

As this is being written, the series finale of the television show Lost is only a few hours away so I decided to write about how the show might end.

Or, depending on when you're reading this it could be how the program could've ended so here we go.

They could go the whole St. Elsewhere route and make it that the show was just something taking place in the mind of an autistic child.

This is how I would end Lost.  The characters are actually on an alien spaceship and the story has been playing out in each of their minds as they are unconscious but the beings have been able to watch it on a big screen, just like we have on television.

Hmmm, that sounds like the plot to a certain Star Trek episode.

The most logical ending though is that somehow there will be a massive explosion which in turn re-sets the time space continuum and the show will conclude with the characters waking up aboard Oceanic Flight 815 and the airplane never crashes in the first place.

The most bleak and saddest finale would be that John Locke a.k.a. the sadistic smoke monster kills everybody, gets off the Island and ends the world because he is in fact the devil.

But, if this awesome show ends like most great TV programs do, in a very disappointing way then it will be Hugo "HurleyReyes imagining the whole thing while he's locked in a rubber room at that mental hospital he was supposedly at in season 5.

Hey, that sounds like the St. Elsewhere plot line!

Oh well, television networks usually lack creativity when it comes to series conclusions so that is what will probably happen, or did happen, depending on when you're reading this.

Google Celebrates Pac Man's Birthday Posted May 21, 2010 by Dangerous Dave

Give Google a cool reason to change their logo and they will!  This time it's to celebrate Pac Man's 30th birthday.  God that makes me feel old!

With this re-vamping of the logo they've really stepped it up too. You can actually play the vintage video game on the main search page.

Head over to Google.com and try it for yourself.

New Hotmail Posted May 18, 2010 by Dangerous Dave

Ah, Hotmail, we had good times together didn't we?   I had my first e-mail address with you after all and I'll always cherish those memories.  It's been years since we've seen each other though.  I wonder if you've changed.  Damn, you look good!  Have you had work done?  Oh, you have!!!

Yes, Hotmail has gone through a metamorphosis and it's aim it seems is to take out Gmail.

Here are just a few of it's upgrades that Microsoft just announced.

Hotmail Highlights Gives you a quick overview of what’s new in your inbox organized by source, such as e-mail contacts or social contacts from Facebook or Twitter.

Sweep is a function which claims to be a simpler alternative to e-mail filtering, enabling you to quickly organize the messages that aren’t exactly spam, but that you don’t want at the top of your inbox.

Microsoft Office Web Apps allow you to edit documents directly from your inbox. You can also store the documents and photos you send on Microsoft SkyDrive, which means you don’t have to worry about size constraints because they live in the cloud.

The new and improved Hotmail also allows you to view photos in a slideshow or videos received from Hulu or YouTube right in the inbox. If you receive attached photos, you can see them in the form of a nifty slideshow.

And finally, Microsoft mentions some other features it hasn’t discussed in detail, like enhanced account protection, full-session SSL, multiple e-mail accounts, subfolders and contact management.

As far as the amount of users Hotmail has, they still have a commanding lead over Google, with an impressive 343 Million to Gmail's 150 Million.  But, in the tech world if you don't keep improving you're bound to start losing market share eventually so that's probably the reason for this overhaul.

The new version of Hotmail launches sometime this summer.

Sh** My Dad Says Posted May 18, 2010 by Dangerous Dave

I was listening to the Bob and Tom Show this morning and they had a news story about a new television show called Sh** My Dad Says starring William "The Shat" Shatner as The Dad.

This television program is awesome on a couple levels.  First, the obvious, it's got Captain Kirk!  Second, it's the very first TV sitcom to be based on tweets.  In case you don't know, a tweet is the short 140 character messages people post to the popular social networking site Twitter.

Here's the story.  A guy by the name of Justin Halpern moves from Los Angeles, back to his parents' house in San Diego.  Shortly after he starts a Twitter feed called Sh** My Dad Says which is a series of quotes made by Halpern's father, Sam, regarding random subjects.  Justin started tweeting on the account on August 3rd, 2009 and within less than a month, the page was featured on The Daily Show, a popular San Francisco blog called Laughing Squid and on Forgetting Sarah Marshall star Kristen Bell's Twitter feed. As of April 2010, Sh** My Dad Says has about 1,260,000 followers.

A book was released based on the feed and has reached #8 on the New York times best seller list for hardcover nonfiction.  And, that led to the television sitcom starring William Shatner.

Obviously they've had to change the name and according to sources the pilot episode has been shot and will air this fall on CBS.
